We’ve all heard this a thousand times…you burn more calories than you consume and you lose weight. But is it really that simple?
You see, simple calorie balance fails to account for the “Thermic Effect of Food” or TEF.
The TEF is the amount of energy it takes for your body to digest, absorb and metabolise the food you eat.
So what does this mean?

Simply put, the 3 main Macronutrients that we consume all have different thermic effects. Fat has only a 3% thermic effect meaning that you store 97% of calories from fat. Carbohydrates have a 7% thermic effect meaning that you store 93% of calories from carbohydrates, and Protein has a 25% thermic effect meaning that you store only 75% of calories from protein.
This means that the more protein you consume, the less calories that you actually store, plus protein keeps you much fuller for longer.
At M.A.S.K. our online nutrition portal gives our clients helpful tips on how to add more quality proteins to their diet, improving appetite satiety, ridding of sugar cravings and helping our clients stay lean and healthy.
